Gunmen Attack Village In Niger State, Kill Many, Abduct Chinese Nationals

Ajata village in the Erena district of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, which is primarily a mining community, was attacked by gunmen on Wednesday. Amongst the many workers at the mine that were abducted are four Chinese nationals.

The gunmen were alleged to have arrived in their numbers armed with AK – 47 rifles and riding on motorcycles.

Sani Abubakar Yusuf Kokki, the Co-convener, Concerned Shiroro Youths Of Niger State, and the Niger State Government confirmed the incident in separate statements issued on Thursday.

“The death toll of Ajata – Aboki massacre of Shiroro LG, Niger State has risen astronomically, at present, almost 30 soldiers have been discovered in the bush and confirmed dead.”
“It is extremely sad and demoralizing to lose such (a) huge number of patriotic citizens and gallant officers at the war front. Speedily, we are being depopulated by marauding terrorists. More are still expected as the search continues.”

“Information at my disposal further proved that about thirteen (13) people including seven (7) mobile policemen attached to the mining site probably as guards (providing security cover for the expatriates) and six (6) other civilians were gruesomely killed through an ambush while scores of others who sustained various degrees of multiple gunshots injuries (some in critical condition) have been taken to various medical facilities for treatment.”

“However, a yet-to-be ascertained number of workers in the mining site including four Chinese nationals were reported to have been abducted,” the Niger government added in a statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar.

According to Kokki the Nigerian Army stationed nearby immediately began taking action to ward off the attack; he said several officers were gunned down by the assailants.
