Thugs Set INEC Office In Enugu Ablaze, Damage Building

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office in Enugu South Local Government Area, LGA, Enugu State, has been burnt down by thugs.

According to information obtained by Vanguard, the incident happened on Sunday night when arsonists attacked the INEC headquarters in Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South LGA.

A security guard who was manning the commission’s premises was also shot and killed by the assailants, who also severely damaged a part of the building.

However, a source from the village speaking to a correspondent from Vanguard said that they swiftly contacted the firemen, who arrived right on schedule but were unable to enter the building to put out the fire because of the body they saw lying lifeless nearby.

“The building would not have been razed totally because we called the fire service men. But they were afraid of going inside because of the person that was shot dead.”

“Everybody was really afraid. They felt the guys were still around. But we knew that the gunmen had left,” a villager said.

In confirming the event, INEC’s public relations officer, Mr. Victor Okafor, stressed that the materials of the commission were unaffected by the fire and that the assailants were only able to set fire to the security house of the building.

He pointed out that despite the commission’s efforts to ensure that electorates’ votes count in the upcoming elections; some continue to enjoy setting INEC premises on fire.
