A high court in Akure, Ondo state have sentenced three men to death by hanging on Friday, June 10, following an investigation into the murder of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The convicts, Lawal Mazaje, Mohammed Shehu, and Adamu Adamu who were armed herdsmen were said to have shot and killed Funke Olakunrin on July 12, 2019 on the Benin-Sagamu expressway, while she was headed to Akure, Ondo State, from Lagos after a visit with her father. The fourth suspect, Auwalu Abubakar, 25, who was on trial for aiding and abetting the crime, was discharged and acquitted by the court. The convicts were also accused of killing a hunter in the forest and were found guilty of all the count charges brought against them.

After several months of intense investigation, the killers were arrested on April 6, 2020, by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force.

Justice Williams Rotimi Olamide, the trial judge sentenced them to death by hanging or firing squad on charges bothering on conspiracy to kill, murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery, in his verdict.
