ASUU had previously been required to return to work by two courts.
On Thursday, October 13, 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will decide whether to continue or end its current strike.
There were rumors that the union had called off the strike following the meeting on October 10, 2022 between the union and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
However, an unidentified ASUU member who spoke with Daily Trust denied the rumor that the union members would meet on Thursday.
“What is flying around is just a mere rumour. There are ways how to handle this type of issue in ASUU. Our NEC will meet on Thursday to take a decision,” the source said.
On Monday, February 14, 2022, the ASUU began an indefinite strike to compel the government to fulfill its remaining demands.
The government eventually took the union to the National Industrial Court after several negotiations between the government and the union failed to resolve their differences.
It should be recalled that the court ordered the ASUU to end the strike on September 21, 2022.
Polycarp Hamman, the trial judge, prohibited the lecturers from continuing their strike until the Federal Government’s suit against them was resolved.
However, the union was dissatisfied with the decision and moved to the Appellate Court to file an appeal.
The Industrial Court’s order was upheld by the Court of Appeal, which asked ASUU to immediately resume work.
In the meantime, the Nigeria Labour Congress praised Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, for intervening in the union-government conflict.
