Taraneh Alidoosti, A Well-Known Iranian Actress, Was Arrested After Criticism Of Death Penalty

Iranian authorities have arrested prominent actress, Taraneh Alidoosti after her criticism of the death penalty in her country.

In a post, the Oscar-winning actress had expressed her support for a protester who had been shot and killed. She was accused of “spreading false information,” according to pro-government media.

Alidoosti was detained a week after she made a post on Instagram showing her support for a man who was executed for allegedly being involved in unrest, according to the state news agency IRNA.

Mohsen Shekari was his name. She wrote in an Instagram post, “Every international organization that is watching this bloodshed and not taking action is a disgrace to humanity.”

On Sunday, Alidoosti’s account was suspended.

ISNA claims that Alidoosti was detained for failing to produce “any documents in line with her claims.”

She was detained for “spreading false information and supporting counter-revolutionary circles,” according to the pro-government news agency Tasnim.

She had previously uploaded a picture of herself to her Instagram page without her hijab on and holding a piece of paper with the words “women, life, freedom” written on it.

In 2020, the actor was sentenced to five months in prison for expressing her disapproval on Twitter of the police for assaulting a woman who had removed her headscarf.

One of the most influential Iranian actors of her generation is regarded as Alidoosti.
