Nigeria’s First Spotify Singles Artist Is Victony

Victony, a rising Nigerian artist who graduated from Spotify RADAR Africa, is going to release the first-ever Nigerian Spotify Single, a cover of Davido’s “Dami Duro.”A disco-influenced cover of Davido’s classic decade-old club banger is available only on Spotify.

With his mixtape “The Outlaw King,” Victony made his debut on the music scene. He started out making Rap music, but now he makes a wide range of sounds that include Afrobeats, R&B, Trap, and Afropop. He continued to win over listeners in 2021 with critically acclaimed singles like “Pray” and the Mayorkun smash “Holy Father.”The reflective song “Kolomental” and the viral hit “Soweto” from his most recent album, the Outlaw EP, which was released in May of this year, have received millions of Spotify streams.

Nearly every Afrobeats fan is familiar with the song “Dami Duro,” Davido’s breakout hit.The track, which was included on his debut album, Omo Baba Olowo, in 2012, continues to be a favorite at Afrobeats raves and club nights all over Africa.

Victony describes the significance of the song as follows:

“Dami Duro is a really beautiful song by Davido. My favorite part of the track is the hook. It’s very audacious, it’s so powerful. I really, really love that. With the Spotify Singles version, we wanted to do something really different to make it more of a classic and give it this disco feel – I’d say ‘Grandpa Ebelebe’ style.”

Spotify is releasing reimagined versions of what many people consider modern-day Nigerian classics, performed by selected artists, to commemorate the legacy of Nigeria’s rich music history. The covers, a first for Spotify Africa, show that Spotify wants to be the global center for discovering and growing Nigerian music.
