In Ogun, Police Arrest Three Suspects Over Alleged Attempted Murder Of Policeman

According to the Police Command in Ogun, three suspects have been detained in connection with an alleged attempt to murder police officer Akinpelu on Sunday, 1st January 2023, while he was performing his duties at Orile Imo in the state’s Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.

In a statement released in Abeokuta on Monday, 2nd January, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the arrest.

According to Oyeyemi, the suspects were apprehended on Saturday while assaulting the police officer and attempting to set a police towing vehicle on fire to obstruct the investigation into the accident’s cause.

Oyeyemi stated that the suspects used a sledgehammer, a stick, and other potentially deadly weapons to attack the police officer and the driver of the towing vehicle as soon as they arrived on the scene.

According to the PPRO, the suspects were obstructing them from bringing one of the accident-related vehicles to the station for additional investigation.

He added that, despite suffering injuries of various severity, the towing truck driver and the police officer managed to flee the scene and make their way to the station.

“The Divisional Police Officer, Owode Egba division, Olasunkanmi Popoola, led his men to the place where he met the suspects who had already poured petrol on the towing vehicle and were about set it ablaze.”

“Three among the hoodlums were arrested while others escaped, but the remaining petrol was recovered from them,” he said.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered that those who escaped must be hunted for and brought to book.

He further directed that the arrested suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
