Did Other Clubs Try To Sign Modric Before His Move To Madrid?

Taking a good look at his achievements since he signed for Real Madrid Luka Modric has one of the most enviable careers any footballer could ever wish for. Becoming the first player to break the dual dominance on the world of football by two of the world’s greatest ever players Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo, clearly speaks a lot of his quality as a player as he went on the win the 2018 Ballon’d Or award and reaching the world cup finals for the first time that same year.

However, Modric’s blistering career has caused many to ask whether he did try to sign for another club before joining Madrid, stating that they would like to know if other teams tried to sign Modric before he sealed a move to Madrid. In this article we shall be taking a look at a particular team that tried to sign Luka Modric before he joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012.

Chelsea football club were said to have made a move for Modric in an attempt to bring him to the Bridge in 2011 even though Modric himself admitted that he wanted to join Chelsea in a bid to genuinely compete for trophies and fight for personal accolades. Futhermore ,in an interview Modric said “I sensed it was time to make a change, I wanted to compete for trophies and championships, and I believed that staying at spurs would prevent me from doing so, I wanted to join a more ambitious club and Chelsea was the perfect fit for me”.

Modric also claimed to have received a call from former Chelsea owner Roman Abrahmovic concerning a move to the Bridge, still in an interview Modric revealed the nature of his discussion with Abramovic stating that he was flattered by Abramovic’s use of words and felt honoured to be contacted directly buy the Russian billionaire concerning a move to west London but all efforts to sign Modric from Spurs were fruitless as his move was greatly opposed by club chairman Daniel Levi even though Modric really wanted to make the switch.

The rivalry between Spurs and Chelsea is not a friendly one and has been on since the 1967 FA cup final which saw spurs defeat Chelsea 2-1 and ever since the hatred between both clubs has been thick. This hatred would seal the sale of Modric to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 for a transfer fee of £30 million.
