The gas station was identified as NELMIC Gas Plant, located opposite the Effurun Post Office, the explosion occurred  at about 10:30pm on Monday night.

Though the exact cause of the fire explosion could not be immediately ascertained according to numerous eye  witnesses it was gathered  that a thunderous sound heralded the fire explosion which razzed down the gas plant completely.

It was also gathered that the inferno

was fast spreading to neighbouring residential buildings and a popular church in the area, before the intervention of operatives from the fire service.

But the number of casualties could not yet be ascertained as it was gathered that unspecified number of persons were feared dead while several others sustained injuries from the fire explosion.

Although there have been no reports of fatalities, several people were severely burnt and many children who fled the area are still unaccounted for. The eyewitness, who filmed the incident, expressed concern about the placement of the gas plant in the middle of a residential area, and urged news outlets to voice their discontent.

“God is wonderful,” the eyewitness said. “But we need to speak out against the placement of gas plants in residential areas. If it was this one that exploded, the whole of aka avenue would have been wiped out.”
