President Muhammadu Buhari u Kigali on Wednesday to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022 scheduled to commence between 20-25 June 2022, in Kigali, Rwanda.
He was received by Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, the Rwanda Minister of Justice and Attorney General on the behalf of President Paul Kagame in company of Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Rwanda Aishatu Musa.
President Buhari was accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama, Mariam Katagum the Minister of State Trade & Investment and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Sadiya Umar Farouq.
CHOGM is held every two years in a member country since 1971. It was last held in the United Kingdom in 2018 but failed to hold in June 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. At CHOGM, Commonwealth leaders reaffirm their common values and agree actions and policies to improve the lives of all their citizens. Decisions taken at CHOGM also guide the work programme of the Commonwealth Secretariat located at Marlborough House in London.
The theme of this year’s CHOGM 2022, which is the 26th edition holding in Rwanda is tagged; “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming”.
CHOGM 2022 official opening will take place on Friday 24 June and will be followed by the main high-level meetings of Heads of States on Friday 24 to Saturday 25 June. Forums, ministerial meetings, side events and other activities had already preceded the official opening.
