Bill To Override Mr. President Suffers Setback

The bill to Override President Buhari Assent in the Electoral Amendment Act 2022 filed by Hon. Ben Roland Igbakpa, Member, PDP representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, has suffered setback today on the floor of the Green Chamber.

The Deputy Speaker, The Right Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, who was presiding asked the sponsor of the motion to step it down as it  violates the procedure of Overriding The President as stipulated in the House Rules. He argued that any move to Override The President requires the consent of 2/3 majority of members of the House.

After several debates the mover of the Motion Hon.Igbakpa stepped it down.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has withheld his signature to sign the one-item amendment to the Electoral Act 2022 neither has he communicated a decision about the bill to the National Assembly.

This generated agitations among some House Members majority of them from the Opposition. Displeased by Mr.Presidents inaction they pushed to Override him relying on Section 58(5) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution which empowers the National Assembly to Override the President if he withholds Assent.
