Over 50 worshippers killed in Owo Catholic Church, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu responds on the scene

St Francis Catholic Church, Owo in Ondo state was attacked by unmasked assailants just as church service ended. About 50 worshippers are feared dead. Eye witnesses has revealed that the attackers ran the church riot with guns and dynamites. The first victim of the attack was an ice cream seller near the gate. Owo is the hometown to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. The governor has been vocal about the 2023 general elections, clamouring that power shifts to southern Nigeria. Some commentators and political analyst are of the opinion that this attack was carried out by northern extremists who found the governor’s remark as offensive. The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has condemned the attack on the Catholic Church in Owo town, Ondo State. The secretary of the organisation said the incident was a direct attack on the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, as well as Yoruba land.
