At least 17 Lagos-bound passengers were burnt to death in an accident that occurred along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in the early hours of Tuesday, November 22.
According to eyewitness report, the accident involving an 18 seater Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME 20 XA and a Daf trailer with registration number BAU 632 XA collided around Yaba junction, along Abuja-Lokoja highway. The eyewitnesses say the 18 seater bus was coming from Abuja-Gwagwalada axis on speed, when it hit the trailer from behind and went up in flames.
Confirming the accident, the FCT sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Samuel Ogar Ochi, attributed the accident to speeding by the bus driver and poor visibility due to the Harmattan.
However, since the corpses were burnt beyond recognition, the commander said the agency will collaborate with security agencies and environmental officials to prepare a mass burial for the victims.
